DISCOVER JAPAN SITES | JAPAN MARKET INTELLIGENCE | OCTOBER 2026

Importing a Nintendo Switch or PlayStation 5 from Japan can offer access to distinctive editions, pre-owned hardware and specialist accessories. Yet an attractive yen price is only the first step: the exact model, language, accessories, seller and import costs matter just as much.

Our 2025–2026 market review compares two snapshots, not a forecast. We examine the yen price, its US-dollar equivalent and the different product cycles of Nintendo and Sony. The objective is to separate observed prices from explanations that still require evidence.

1. One Year Later: Japan’s Used Console Market, 2025 vs. 2026

Our original 2025 article reported a used Nintendo Switch range of ¥14,000–¥25,000 and a used PS5 Standard range of ¥55,000–¥70,000. These prices were collected in real time while preparing the original 2025 edition.

They are historical published observations, not a saved set of individual Amazon offer records with matched conditions and accessories. We retain them as a contemporaneous snapshot, not a statistically measured Amazon price index.

During our October 2026 review, indicative Amazon Japan references discussed for a Switch were around ¥11,200 and for an original PS5 CFI-1000A01 around ¥57,000. Their precise seller, bundle contents, availability and comparable condition have not been independently archived and verified. Consequently, the following table illustrates the analytical method rather than certifying year-on-year market depreciation.

Used console2025 published rangeOctober 2026 indicative Amazon reference

Bar lengths are scaled within each model, not between Switch and PS5. These are different kinds of observations and do not establish a verified depreciation rate.

KYOTEN Analysis: The Hidden Currency Variable

Using an October 2025 reference of ¥153.06 per US dollar and an October 2026 editorial rate of ¥158, the same yen amount converts into fewer dollars in 2026. This currency effect differs from a change in the Japanese retail price.

Switch — 2025 published minimum ¥14,000 / US$91.47 Indicative 2026: ¥11,200 / US$70.89
PS5 — 2025 published minimum ¥55,000 / US$359.34 Indicative 2026: ¥57,000 / US$360.76

For Nintendo Switch, the lower observed 2026 reference and the currency conversion point in the same direction. For PS5, the modestly higher yen reference is almost offset in dollar terms.

This is a comparison of two dates, not a prediction. It does not prove that every used console on Amazon Japan followed the same path.

2. Why Nintendo and PlayStation May Have Behaved Differently

Nintendo: A New Hardware Generation

Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025. It represents a direct next generation after the original Switch family.

The large installed base of the original Switch and the arrival of a successor are important structural facts when examining the second-hand market. They make additional resale supply plausible but do not establish how many units were resold or what percentage of any price change the new model caused.

Sony: Upgrades Within the PS5 Platform

PS5 Pro launched on November 7, 2024. It offers higher graphics performance but remains within the PS5 software platform rather than introducing a PS6 generation.

A standard PS5 continues to play PS5 games. Buyers may value the disc drive, price, familiar hardware or improved performance differently. This distinction may influence how consumers evaluate an original used PS5.

A New ¥55,000 Japan-Only Alternative

Sony launched a Japanese-language-only PS5 Digital Edition on November 21, 2025, at ¥55,000 including tax. Its Japanese-language and account-region restrictions make it different from other regional PS5 offerings.

A new digital unit at ¥55,000 is not equivalent to a used original disc-equipped unit advertised near ¥57,000. Physical media, account limitations, accessories and condition all influence the comparison.

Evidence boundary: hardware generations, official launches and regional restrictions are documented facts. Their contribution to the exact Amazon resale-price differences remains an interpretation, not a proven causal relationship.

3. Language and Region Compatibility

The original Nintendo Switch, Switch 2 and PS5 must not be treated as identical regarding regional support. System languages, game languages, accounts and downloadable content require separate checks.

Before purchasing, check the game edition, available languages, DLC region, account requirements and backward compatibility. A physical game’s general regional compatibility does not guarantee identical digital services or language support.

4. New, Used or Refurbished: What Does the Listing Mean?

Used, tested and refurbished products do not automatically offer equivalent guarantees. Conditions depend on the seller and the specific product.

Check the model code, controllers, cables, dock, charging equipment, drive operation, cosmetic wear, return rules and warranty terms.

5. Japan vs. International Console Prices

International prices must be compared using equivalent models, conditions, dates, exchange rates and taxes. The following original 2025 comparison remains as historical context, not as a current 2026 price list.

6. Import Savings in Argentina: Historical Example

The original article discussed potential import savings of 40–50%. Such results depend on the product, shipping, taxes and comparable prices in the destination country. They cannot be treated as a universal saving in October 2026.

Calculate the Total Landed Cost

Final cost = product + international shipping + applicable taxes + handling and payment charges.

Actual saving = comparable local price − final import cost.

The exchange rate alone cannot determine the final economic benefit of importing a console.

7. Shipping, Customs, Voltage and Warranty

Amazon Japan allows international orders for eligible listings and destinations. Shipping availability varies by seller, product and delivery address.

Forwarding and purchasing services such as Tenso, Buyee and ZenMarket operate under different conditions. Confirm their fees, battery restrictions, shipment limits and return policies before using them.

United States: the former general $800 de minimis duty-free treatment was suspended effective August 29, 2025. Do not assume that a console below $800 enters duty-free. See U.S. Customs guidance.

European Union and Latin America: import VAT, duties, thresholds and administration charges depend on destination and customs rules. There is no universal Latin American import-tax percentage.

Voltage: check the exact console and power-supply label, plug and local electrical requirements. Never assume every charger or accessory supports all voltage ranges.

Warranty: Japan-market products may have domestic-only manufacturer support. Review the seller’s warranty and return arrangements, including return shipping to Japan.

8. Accessories and Gadgets: Original Comparison

Accessory prices differ by model, manufacturer, generation and market. The following graphic preserves the original 2025 comparison for historical reference.

The second-hand market deserves careful inspection rather than sweeping assumptions about perfect condition. Earlier-generation consoles can offer value when their price, specification and seller terms align with the buyer’s needs.

11. Market Evolution: What the Two Snapshots Reveal

The October 2025 reference ranges and the indicative October 2026 listings do not establish a general market depreciation rate.

They do reveal different pricing observations for the two console families. Nintendo’s direct generational transition and Sony’s continued PS5 platform provide relevant context for understanding why consumer preferences and resale behavior may differ.

The currency layer is separate: comparing yen prices and their dollar equivalents at each historical date demonstrates why a local-price movement can look different to an international buyer.

These are observations about two dates, not projections about future prices.

KYOTEN principle: A price discrepancy justifies investigation. A purchasing decision requires evidence about the exact product, seller, region, shipping, taxes, warranty and total cost.

Sources and Research Notes

Research date: October 9, 2026. The 2025 price ranges were collected in real time during preparation of the original article. Individual archived product listings were not retained. The October 2026 Amazon price observations are indicative and have not been established as a fully matched and archived set of comparable listings. They should not be interpreted as a statistical measure of market depreciation. USD values are calculated using the reference exchange rates explicitly indicated.
